These samples come from a variety of projects (shared with author permission). They showcase my eye for detail and my ability to give feedback to help writers improve, and they can give you a glimpse of my editing style. In every piece I edit, I seek to encourage and lift, and the final decision is always left up to you, the author.
Magazine Article
This article is an example of my content editing work. I edited it during my time as the assistant managing editor of a travel magazine. For this article, I left comments on the questions I had as a reader along with my suggestions for improving clarity to help the author better reach her audience.
Fantasy Novel
This excerpt comes from a fantasy novel that I offered feedback on. I performed a detailed content edit (or line edit) on this section focused on improving clarity, readability, and word choice while maintaining the author’s voice. I prompted ideas for the writer through questions and my own suggestions for removing redundancy and improving descriptions. You’ll notice that this type of editing is less focused on small grammar or punctuation errors as some sections may be rewritten after edits.
Family History Book
This excerpt is an example of copyediting from a family history book that I edited for publication. With this text, I avoided making large changes and instead focused on correcting errors in punctuation and grammar. I also occasionally made changes to improve clarity. All of my edits were in line with my client’s specific goals for the text and a style guide.
Oral History Transcription
For this particular project, the interviewee preferred clarity over a word-for-word transcription. After transcribing the interview, I preformed this copyedit on the transcription. In my edits, I focused on maintaining the interviewee’s voice while making the transcription easier to read.
